His original and eclectic music style is known as Afrophonik Rhythms engages an audience with talent and charm. His band, called Rotimi Hundeyin and De Afrophonik Rhythms Crew hold a powerful stage presence and includes a full horn section, drums, percussion, female vocalists, keyboards and several guitars this band has a unique and powerful stage presence. Such collaboration with a full spectrum of diverse ethnicities and races of Americans has never been seen before in African music, a testament to Rotimi’s forward-thinking methods.

For Rotimi growing up in 1980’s, Nigerian music became a passion. At a young age he excelled at performance, quickly picking up drums, trumpet, saxophone and piano. As a teenager it became clear that music was to be a way of life for Rotimi, and by his mid-twenties he earned the title of Music Director for The Lagos State (similar to New York) Council for Arts and Culture. It was at this time that he began touring with Femi Kuti (son of legendary Fela Kuti) and The Positive Force. Sharing the stage with some of the world’s top musicians including: Hugh Masekela, Roy Hargrove, Erykah Badu, Damian Marley, Lucky Dube, The Gorillaz, Green Fields, Kilimanjaro, Orlando Julius, and The Lagos Folk Quintet. His work has been produced by such luminaries as Danger Mouse.

A man of paradox, Rotimi questions violence with beauty. His focus is sharp, providing a musical resolution to the political injustice he knew growing up. With songs like Osusu he questions the relationships mankind has with one another and suggests a higher way of life. Heavily influenced by African folk music and jazz legends like Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, Hugh Masekela, Dizzy Gillespie, Fela Kuti, and Miles Davis, Rotimi’s music breaks the world music mold. He balances genius with simplicity, an amalgamation of soul, afro-beat, rock, hip-hop, and jazz. He is currently working on his first solo album with his Afrophonik Rhythms Crew.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://phillybookspace.blogspot.com/2011/08/afrobeat-august-19th-9pm.html' title='Afrobeat! With Dan Cohan switching between drums and guitar and James Klink juggling guitar and keyboards, the duo pile on layers of loops and beautiful overlapping tangles of melody and polyrhythms. Building each song up and tearing it back down with linear song structures and ingenious arrangements, The Water transcend predictable soft-loud-soft dynamics but almost always reach a euphoric crescendo, often accompanied by a flash of color from the strange obelisk of light that stands center stage.

Speed Skating
http://www.speedskatingmusic.com/
Speed Skating is a noise-pop 4-piece from Philadelphia. Often loop-driven, sometimes layered, and sometimes spacious, the group always keeps ambient sonic textures and a pop sensibility at the forefront.

Slant of Light
website
Slant of Light started anew in early 2010 as a three-piece consisting of an acoustic and electric guitar, drums and plenty of vocal cords. While the three members hold very different musical tastes individually, together they blend rock, Americana, bluegrass and folk into original songs influenced by the likes of Tom Waits, Devil Makes Three and Wolf Parade. The group released their first full-length LP “Treading Water” in November 2010, where they dedicated their focus to harmony, thoughtful arrangements and emotion that many fans can relate to. Since the release, Slant of Light has continuously played shows around the Boston area, including The Burren, The Lily Pad, Precinct, and Church. The group is currently working on their third album, which is sure to add energy and depth to upcoming live shows.

An Evening of Nigerian Afrobeat.

Yemi's Bio

The product of a transcontinental youth, yemi’s sound is boundless. Her songs are conceived, developed, and delivered to express not only emotions, but the human condition. Sometimes playful, sometimes spiritual, and always authentic, yemi’s music speaks the universal languages of beauty, pain, and love.

Opeyemi Akanbi, a native of Nigeria, is a young educator and musician. Igniting a fiery revolution for unity through music, The Spinning Leaves establish this spark through a masterful connection with the lilting, ethereal vibes of fellow local Philadelphia artist, Hezekiah Jones (the musical nom-de-plum of Raphael Cutrufello). This highly anticipated collaboration entitled “The Spinning Leaves & Hezekiah Jones Performing as… Hezekiah Leaves & The Spinning Joneses” is set for release through Drexel University’s MAD Dragon Records on March 8th as a dual EP. Part one (the first seven tracks) is Hezekiah Leaves which soulfully generates an eccentric wit while Part Two (the second seven tracks) presents The Spinning Joneses which explores contemplative thoughts of “fear, sadness, and the continued wonder of it all,” as Gettes describes.

“Cutrufello’s songs are filled with outlandish characters, imagined landscapes, ringing harmonies, and baroque instrumental flourishes, but never disconnect from the tangible feelings at their center,” describes Peter Marinari of CBS Local. Gettes’ instant attraction to these distinguishable qualities of Cutrufello’s craft paralleled by his admiration for her own unique flair were what initially planted the seeds from which this collaboration ultimately blossomed. Gettes and Cutrufello met for the first time in the summer of 2006 in a local park and began what would become the first of many symbiotic jam sessions. They then immediately shifted to performances together at the various open mics throughout the city.

In October of the same year, Gettes then came across southern transplant, Baker, at her own birthday party and shortly thereafter, the pair embarked upon what could only be deemed as a predestined journey which also started in a park. From that moment on, Baker and Gettes have consistently created tunes incorporating a high-spirited and undaunted mix of gang vocals, stomps, and horns including instrumentation such as the sitar, oud, pump organ and even the delicate whispers of children. The Spinning Leaves’ sounds are as organic as that very park in which it all began.

Faithful to the hope of building bridges in the folk community through the use of music, this new collaborative album showcases an enchanting blend of various personal and communal relationships. Each track encapsulates the essence of “bohemian folkster” Cutrufello along with Baker’s small-town, authentic talent and Gettes’ undeniable passion. Easily considered by many the epicenter of Philadelphia’s burgeoning folk community, The Spinning Leaves & Hezekiah Jones together founded The Philadelphia Folk Parade. Quickly becoming a powerful force for the folk community, The Philadelphia Folk Parade consists of a rotating lineup of over 40 of the area’s best musicians and has already been featured in Philly Weekly, 6ABC’s “Tuned In”, has been showcased on the main stage at the 2010 Philadelphia Folk Festival, and most recently received an Honorable Mention in the City Paper’s “Big Vision Awards.”

As Hezekiah Leaves & The Spinning Joneses, the trio will share their mesmerizing folk prowess as an enjoyable keystone for the inevitable conception of the new, roaring folk era that has already captured the attention of music folkies all over.

THE EXTRAORDINAIRES
http://www.myspace.com/theextraordinaires
With pop-rock meets folk music sensibilities, and purely artistic stage antics to match, the Extraordinaires are known for putting on shows that are both musically captivating and visually entertaining. Sean Moeller of Daytrotter.com describes The Extraordinaires’ music as “bumping, cheerful arrangements that run the gamut through early Flaming Lips psychedelia, via albums like ‘Clouds Taste Metallic’ and ‘Transmissions From The Satellite Heart,’ to bright and sparkly pieces of pure pop that feel like pizzeria cabarets and exploding rainbow tales.”

NIC ESPOSITO of the SAVAGE DETECTIVES
Nic Esposito is a storyteller, writer and urban farmer in West Philly. When he's not digging in the dirt he works on his community story telling project, Philly Corner Stories. This year the company will attempt to find out why we tell stories. What is it about the narrative that has been so influential to our society? Why have stories affected our lives so much?

Tales is loosely based on Ovid’s Tristia, an ancient story of the poet’s journey into exile. Found cast members, with Felipe, have adapted the text while weaving in personal stories. By allowing the audiences to move organically through the piece, the emotional stakes are raised. Using music, dance, and poetic dialogue, Tales’ avant-garde nature creates a new way one can look at theatre and, in turn, storytelling.

Where: Bookspace, 1113 Frankford Avenue (1/2 block south of Girard Ave), Philadelphia, PA 19125

When: September 3rd – 18th, 2010
